KNITTING THE ARCTIC LIGHT SWEATER | SLOW FASHION + AUDIOBOOKS

Information

Pattern: Arctic Light Sweater by Veronika Lindberg.

Yarn: Sandnesgarn "Double Sunday" (100% merino wool) and Isager Silk Mohair (75% super kid mohair, 25% silk). Isager Silk Mohair is spun and colored in Italy for the Danish brand Isager. Sandnesgarn is without Superwash. Sandnesgarn claims only 30% of their wool as Norwegian-produced.

Needles: KnitPro interchangeable corded needles in 3mm and 5mm with interchangeable 40cm and 80cm cords. 5 double-sided needles for rib. A wool (blunt) needle to tie in threads at the end and during felling.

Plastic cords for arms: borrowed from a set of macrame we had at the cabin from when I was a child.

Additions: 1 round marker [recommended], a handful of stitch markers[recommended], and 4 endstoppers.

KNITTING DIARY

This is my first knitting project of any size and thus I wanted to journal some of it to keep myself engaged and aware of the immense effort it will take to complete this project. I'm also a bookish person so having an overview of the books I read while knitting is a fun sentiment. This knitting diary is therefore a mix of small progress updates and the books and shows I consume while knitting.

May 4th - May 28th

While I began knitting this sweater I took the opportunity to listen to audiobooks. For this first part of the sweater I listened to the following books on Libby:

1. Sunreach (Skyward Flight 2.1) by Brandon Sanderson (5 hours)

2. Redawn (Skyward Flight 2.2) by Brandon Sanderson (7 hours)

3. Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim (13 hours)

4. Unthetered Sky by Fonda Lee (4 hours)

JUNE

I continued knitting in June despite my bunny having to amputate a toe and needing 24hours care for nearly the entire month. I knit a lot after midnight while waiting for some unholy hour to force feed him medicine. Eventually, this became the result.

JULY & AUGUST

These months can be summed up as "I binge watched all seasons of Castle" (2009) while knitting (some). It stays one of my all-time favorite crime dramas. At this point I began feeling tired by my project.

SEPTEMBER

Knitting while watching the cut scenes and dialogues in Genshin Impact. The main body is nearly done, but everything is moving excrutiatingly slow.

OCTOBER-NOVEMBER

I barely knit anything at all.

DECEMBER

Reaching the sleeves felt like defeat. I have knitted so much, but there is still so long to go and I didn't particularly like how the sweater looked at this point. Lighting is bad indoors as well. I am burning out, and I hate the thought that I have to do two of the exact same for the sleeves.

Mid-December, I decided to take a break.

I knit a lot to the tv-series adaption (2023) of:

"Lessons in Chemistry" by Bonnie Germus.

JULY

I complete most of the first sleeve while listening to "The Poppy War" by R. F. Kuang. The audiobook is amazing, and pulled me through the 18+ hours of work I put into the arm over a 2-week period this summer.

OKTOBER

I finish the rib on the first sleeve by working 1-2 rounds every other day to try and get myself started. Completing the first arm and seeing the result inspire me to continue.

NOVEMBER

November 1st

I decide I will complete this sweater before Yule. Or new years. Whatever comes to pass.

November 16th, Saturday

I am on the last few rounds of the rib on the last arm. I've worked at least an hour nearly every day this month. I don't currently listen to audiobooks, but I watched Hidden Figures (2016), Outer Banks (2020), Alchemy of Souls (2022), linear-tv and youtube while working this sleeve. I can see the end. I hope to be able to finish it tomorrow.

November 17th - finishing and blocking

I finished the rib and felling! The sweater is done. I wait a few hours before I start blocking it. It's a terrifying process since I can stretch out the sweater and leave it disfigured if I do it wrong. I think it went well, but we'll see in a day or two when it is fully dried.

November 18-19th

Waiting for it to dry... and it's doone! I am happy with the result, but most of all that I AM DONE. I did it! I keep joking this is the start and end of my knitting careere, but if that's the truth or not, time will show. I can't wait to use this sweater during winter.
